We all know Durga Puja is a celebration of Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura.

But, not many know how and why Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura with her trishul in a certain manner.

Mahishasura (Devil) was in a war with the Devas (Gods) and was almost untouched as he was blessed with a boon that no male could kill him.

The Devas, led by Lord Indra, were defeated by Mahishasura. It was then the Gods decided to combine their divine energies and take form of Goddess Durga.

Goddess Durga took charge of the battle against Mahishasura and while riding her lion, she slayed Mahishasura right across his heart.

That’s right. She planted trishul exactly on Mahishasura’s heart to open his heart chakra. Goddess Durga took a pre-determined aim at the fourth chakra of the human body – the heart chakra, in order to release the negative energies and mark his awakening.

Indians, while growing up, are usually surrounded by the stories of Hinduism, Gods, and Goddesses. Since, our history is vast and there’s isn’t just one specific source to go back to, continuous learning of one’s roots and lesser-known details always add depth to the character.
